The main focus of my work is animal ecology with a particular interest in phytophagous insects and their associations with host plants. In the past I have analysed patterns of alpha and beta diversity on published data of the fauna of cabbage plants (Brassicaceae). Furthermore, I am interested in biogeographical patterns of host use and species associations of phytophagous insects and their parasitoids. In particular, I am studying thistles (Cynaroideae) and their fruit fly fauna (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Europe. Another topic are biological invasions, especially the colonisation of new (alien) host plants by phytophages and the characteristics of the host plant responsible for the colonisation success. Furthermore, I am conducting some macroecological work with birds investigating the importance of taxonomic diversity indices. I was one of the responsible persons developing the sampling scheme for arthropods in the EU-project GREENVEINS. Since beginning of 2006 I am involved in organising the German network of Long-Term Ecological Research LTER-D and in parallel I am engaged in development of criteria for LTER sites and work within the EU-project ALTER-Net. Actually, I am responsible for building up and managing the LTSER region Leipzig - Halle which is going to be established by the UFZ.
