Summer School: Concepts, methods and tools to engage in participatory research and governance processes

The course aims to: a) improve understanding of the challenges related to stakeholder involvement in research and governance processes; b) deliver a generic frame for planning and facilitate sound participatory processes; c) teach innovative participatory methods and tools useful for addressing complex issues in diverse, multi-level stakeholder settings; d) develop reflexive capacities for continuous process improvement.

Participants will:

 

- obtain theoretical and practical knowledge on participatory processes, methods and tools;

- gain competencies in conducting a participatory process: examining the context, planning and facilitating the process and critically  evaluating the outcomes;

- identify the most adequate participatory tools and implement them in their own project.

 

Application contexts may concern the development and execution of research projects or programs, participatory decision making, policy development and implementation. 

 
Learning methods:

 

A mix method approach will be used, including theoretical presentations, interactive exercises and group work, plenary discussions, and simulations. Participants will apply the participatory methods and tools by working on their own case study.

 

Program:

 

The summer school is divided in 8 blocks which will take place during 5 days.

1st block: introduction of the summer school.

2nd block: concepts, definitions and main issues about participation.

3rd block: analysing the context undergoing a participatory process.

4th block: planning a participatory process.

5th block: participatory tools and settings.

6th block: facilitation tools.

7th block: evaluation of participatory processes

 

8th block: summing up: identify the principles of a participatory process and how to apply them.
