Technology and Methodology Information Platform

The demands in terms of data quality and spatio-temporal resolution of data are growing rapidly. Integrated, interdisciplinary environmental research and the use of coupled models lead to the development of new sensing methods, unprecedented information about the status of and fluxes within the environmental systems will become available. In order to assure and maintain comparability of results at the national and international scale, general principles in terms of technical standards and monitoring methodologies of LTER-sites have to be developed. Following these lines of arguments, the EP Technology/Methodology agreed to develop and provide an information platform of European expertise in abiotic/biotic monitoring.

Whereas the general scope of the EP Technology/Methodology is basic assistance in the field of monitoring, the information platform may be used to locate experts in specific fields of monitoring to provide information and support which is beyond the scope of the EP. The named persons have agreed to be mentioned within the data base.

  • Lysimetry - Lysimetry is a technique of abiotic/biotic monitoring. A specific measuring device (lysimeter) allows one to measure the amount of actual evapotranspiration which is released by plants, usually crops or trees. By recording the amount of precipitation and energy constraints that an area receives and the amount lost through the soil, the amount of water lost to evapotranspiration can be calculated and the water balance can be closed.
  • Wireless Sensor Networks - Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are an emerging and promising technology for environmental monitoring. The technology allows the real-time monitoring of abiotic state variables in high spatial and temporal resolution. In the last few years major steps torward a better availability of the WSN-technique have been made and today low cost, low power networks are available.
  • Geophysical surveying - Geophysical survey enables the rapid collection of geophysical data in high spatial resolution. Geophysical survey  technologies cover a great variety of sensing instruments, and data may be collected from above or below the Earth's surface or from aerial or marine platforms and will be used in many applications of environmental science.
