Long-Term Ecosystem Research in Europe

R: Research (and Monitoring)

Explains the term 'research' in the LTER context

Coupled monitoring and research are key components of LTER, enabling the development of long-term data sets which are a basis for cross-scale comparisons. Research includes data interpretation, modelling and experimental manipulation (e.g. warming or drought experiments to simulate climate change scenarios) and knowledge synthesis. LTER involves a range of approaches from low-tech (e.g. counting bird numbers, or surveying vegetation quadrats) to high-tech (e.g. satellite imaging to measure net primary productivity in regions of the globe or the use of automatic sensors attached to buoys to study lake environments).
