Siptenfelde is part of the TERENO observation network (www.tereno.net). Main goals of research at this site are: (i) the investigation of long-term effects of different land use intensities on biodiversity and ecosystem services and (ii) the development of methods for quantification and prediction of water fluxes at the small catchment scale (including selected aspects of coupled water and solute flux). Knowledge gained by intensive measurements and detailed process studies will be used to transfer observation concepts and process understanding to larger or less instrumented catchments.
The total area of the site is 16 km². The site includes a hydrological observatory covering the Schäfertal catchment, a small middle mountain catchment with an area of 1.44 km². See here fr further details of research objectives and available instrumentation.
