ECOPOTENTIAL project - using LTER data - meets in the Netherlands

Donãna, an LTER site providing data to ECOPOTENTIAL

The EU H2020-funded ECOPOTENTIAL project is holding its first General Assembly in Texel, Netherlands from 27-30 June 2016. Among the project members are several members of the current eLTER H2020 project including CNR (Italy), UGR (Spain), UFZ (Germany), BGU (Israel) and EAA (Austria). CSIC (Spain), who operate the Donãna LTSER platform are also partners.

ECOPOTENTIAL is focussing its activities on a targeted set of internationally recognised Protected Areas, blending Earth Observations from remote sensing and field measurements, data analysis and modelling of current and future ecosystem conditions and services. ECOPOTENTIAL considers cross-scale geosphere-biosphere interactions at regional to continental scales, addressing long-term and large-scale environmental and ecological challenges.

Among the study sites included in the project are European LTER sites and LTSER platforms, including the Wadden Sea (Netherlands), Montado (Portugal), Donãna and Sierra Nevada (Spain), Limestone Alps (Austria) and the Negev (Israel). Together with other sites, they form the in-situ component of the project. Data from these sites is being combined with Earth Observation data collected by satellites (with special emphasis on Copernicus services) to analyse threats to protected areas related to global change. The provision of in-situ data is being led by LTER-Europe and eLTER coordinator, EAA (Austria).

The meeting is taking place by the Wadden Sea, a relatively new Dutch Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research platform.
